From Corp to Crafting with 2Gurlz, LLC - 30 days in...

Happy 2021 Everyone!

A little late on saying this, but since we’re in early January, I think I’m still allowed to say it and not have people look at me strangely.

Since my transition from “Corp to Crafting” in early December, I’m finally getting around to writing my first blog.

The first Monday after leaving, I woke up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed with a mission and a plan for the day. However, 10 mins into sitting down at my laptop, my squirrely mind said “hmm…a Hot Cocoa Ball  sounds delish”. Next stop – the Kitchen. As my milk heated up, I said to myself “Self, you will create a 90-day journal of what it looks like in the day of your life from “Corp to Crafting”. Welp, that didn’t happen… soon after finishing my Hot Cocoa, my first nap of the day took place.

Later that evening, my prior manager reached out to me to ask how my first day went. I told her “the manager (me), had to have a stern conversation about the amount of breaks, and lack of focus with her employee (me) already. She cracked up, and said “tell the manager (you), to be easy on the employee (you)…this is all new to her”. We both had a great laugh …

Several days into this transition,  I thought “wow, this will be easy breezy…my own boss, I can do my own thing and manage my own self”.. Well… I’ll tell anyone, if you think it’s easy, it’s not. In Corp America, I had a Marketing/eCommerce team to help me create and share my messaging to the employees, I had a team (the Squirrel Squad) that was my support system, lots of cool people to do watercooler talk with, and ask my daily famous line “What’s for lunch?”. Being a start up small business, you only have YOU!

The second week rolled around, and again I woke up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed with a mission and plan for the week. HOWEVER, I got derailed a few times. (i.e. Naps, Netflix, Amazon and YouTube). Given there were a few diversions, I managed to create a few Facebook/LinkedIn entries, and completed a few orders. Mid-week, I started to get a little concerned on whether I made the right decision, self doubt started to creep in.

My “mentors” (won’t mention their names, but they know who they are) called and checked in on me. I conveyed to them that some days were a bit unproductive, and questioned if I made the right decision. They said “Jan, you haven’t had a break in over a year, this is your time to breathe…you’ll be fine. We have faith and confidence in you.” (the photo is the beautiful gift they sent me…love them and wouldn’t trade them for anything)

I wasn’t concerned about orders, because they were steady prior to taking the leap. It seemed once I gave my notice, it was like the floodgates blew open and the orders were coming in via email, text, phone, and any other way customers knew how to contact me… I think some even arrived snail mail.

Fast forward, January 4th, marked my one month of being my own boss/CEO. WOW, never thought I would say that…still pinching myself.

As I look back, the month of December was my time to rest, regroup, get focused and ready for all the great things that will take place in 2021.

What solidified this thought, was the Friday episode of Kelly & Ryan…

Kelly said “January” is now changed to “Jan-U-Ready”. I felt like she was speaking directly to me! She is my new best friend in my head!

For those who might not get it, let me break it down for you.

Jan is my name

U=I’m/Me

Ready-Ready to take on the world/2021

No doubt it was a huge leap, with long days and nights, (but that’s because my creative brain can’t shut down.), but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world…oh wait…there are two things I do miss…the steady/guaranteed paycheck every two weeks, and the company paid benefits. LOL

If you have a passion, follow it. Don’t let your dreams pass you by, life is too short…live your life!

Hope you enjoy some of my December creations, had a ton of fun creating/making them….

My motto is “I Turn Your Vision Into Reality”

Stay blessed and Healthy!

Welcome to 2Gurlz LLC

Never ever thought I’d be at this point in my crafting life…Today is my first day of blogging about something in which I have a true passion for. My blog will not be your typical boring blog that you read on some craft websites, that’s not my personality. I’m bred from a witty family…I remember my friends saying they loved coming over, because our family was comical. Well that’s what you’re going to get when you read my blogs...Thinking back as far as I can, I’ve always had a passion for crafting.  I remember going over my friend Tanya’s house when we were in middle school, and seeing her sticker collection…yup I said it, sticker collection. Well that was the beginning of my true craftiness… we always hit up the mall for stickers, and anywhere I saw stickers I’d buy them. Well my bedroom door turned into a work of art. (never took pics, wish I would’ve, it was beautiful). Seriously, I strategically placed them on my door like I was Leonardo Da Vinci painting the Mona Lisa. So thank you Tanya, for stirring up my soul to make beautiful things. As the years progressed, I’d make little things here and there (even tried my hand at going to school for Interior Design)… Yeah, that didn’t work out well. The professor asked the class to draw and paint…that was a total fail…because I can’t draw, nor paint…but now when I think back on it, he wasn't trying to see if I was going to be a famous artist, he was trying to pull our creativity out of us. Art is in the eye of the beholder…so how you see a leaf and the colors, I might see it differently and have my own interpretation....I've seen some crappy art out there, but it has sold for millions. So see…I could’ve been famous by now, if I would've just listened and did what my professor asked me to do.

I continued to dibble and dabble throughout the years, creating centerpieces for my wedding, birthday parties/baby showers, etc..but fast forward to 2002 my CIGNA days. My manager at that time always talked about creating scrapbooks, (clueless to what those were) so one day she invited a group of us “cool employees” to her scrapbook party…My friend Angelica and I went…Why? Why? Why?…that opened a can of VERY EXPENSIVE WORMS...I remember and STILL have my very expensive purchases from her party. My poor family was then subjected to my new expensive hobby…scrapbooking/card making. I was addicted, and how fantastic was this? I was back to purchasing my first love…STICKERS…WOOO WHOOOO…it couldn’t get any better than this. My really good friend Danielle(stupid dog), who was also in the beginning stages of creating cards/scrapbooks, turned me on to a scrapbook store close to CIGNA. I’ll never forget my first time…it was like HEAVEN’S GATES OPENED UP…Harps were playing and the angels were singing…She and I would go there during lunch on a daily (oops I mean weekly basis-just in case our families are reading this…LOL) to purchase new items. We were in heaven…Every Friday, I packed up my stuff and headed to her house…I think we did more cocktailing then we did crafting. I’ll never forget one night, we put our hearts into making what we thought were really great cards. However, when her husband walked in the house and we asked him what he thought of them, he said “those are some busted looking cards”…LOL…so maybe we did do too much cocktailing, but it sure was fun. We continued to invest in our “business” (that never took off the ground) and I continued to take classes at different scrapbook stores. I love Danielle, she is one of the brightest people I know in coming up with “businesses”, but they are only thoughts…lol…and not executed. If you need a concept, reach out to her…LOL. I had invested a lot of money, so decided to pursue the business realm, while she moved on to making jewelry…(I’ll never forget her calling me to say I should start making jewelry with her)…NOT…I told her, you got me hooked on cards/scrapbooking and I’ve invested heavily, so I’m moving forward with my business…

The name of my business came easily to me; I have two daughters…and they can be pretty crafty when they want…the youngest more than the oldest, but she’s great at gluing (LOL)…Since I make unique items, why not make the name of my company unique…2Gurlz
I’ve always told my two daughters from when they were little; follow their passion…so that’s what I’m doing now….it’s never too late!

In my upcoming blogs, I’ll add some historical and most recent pictures of items I’ve made and some context around how I made them, what inspired me and also what I have in the pipeline…

Stay tuned, and Welcome to 2Gurlz LLC
